Stellan Skarsgård
Insomnia
directed by Erik Skjoldbjærg

The Al Pacino remake of this film stays remarkably true to the original, with a few notable exceptions.. Stellan is an ace Swedish detective flown in to help solve a Norwegian girl's murder.  Al was an LA detective flown to Alaska, if I recall correctly.

Since Norwegian police don't carry guns, he's not supposed to either.  Naturally he comes in strapped, hence the unfortunate shooting of his partner and subsequent cover-up.

Neither one can sleep a wink, but Stellan's character is much darker than Pacino.   With the schoolgirl for instance, he was the aggressor, and later he halfway sexually assaults the desk clerk at his hotel before she too runs off, frightened.

To add to his frustration,  the Norwegians complain about his Swedish constantly, claiming not to understand him. I see this a lot in Scandinavian films, and it always cracks me up, but it's wonderful to hear him in his native language.
