When I saw this a few years ago I was disappointed that the fast-paced direction seemed to detract from some great performances. Others enjoy this style, but the constantly jumping back and forth from Redford's debriefing to spyboy Pitt's travails was a little annoying to me. The overloaded subplots failed to build the level of suspense prevalent in the CIA building, which was the best part.  They could have filmed the entire movie there, as far as I'm concerned.

Once again in Virginia (Langley), Dillane is perfect as "Chuck", the high-level CIA suit who smells a rat and won't be deterred from tracking it down. He would only have to look at me with those eyes and I'd tell him everything he wanted to know. Oddly he doesn't seem to have that same effect on Redford.
