Savage Grace

If only I could PhotoShop that guy out of the picture...
What else went wrong? I
don't mean with the boy's upbringing, I think we all know the answer to
that. The question is how a notorious real life story of incest and
matricide with two of the most interesting actors working today could
end up a snooze-fest? How is this even possible?
I could listen to Dillane read the phone book, and I've watched Power & Lovers all the way through for Christsakes. The best scene with Dillane and Moore is in the very beginning, and though I've only seen the first half, I really don't care if
I ever see the ending.
I think
the writing made these characters so one-dimensional that even Julianne
Moore and Stephen Dillane couldn't breathe life into them. I had the
feeling I was watching a Danielle Steele novel adapted for the cinema.
The Baekelands were real people, real disturbed
people, but nonetheless their story requires a certain caring from the
audience to be interesting. They don't have to be likable, but
they do need to be interesting. The arty style and stilted
language only
alienated me further, and after 40 minutes I wanted them all thrown off
of a cliff, like the cartoon characters they appeared. I just didn't care.
