Ordinary Decent CriminalIs it me, or is Kevin Spacey the same character in all of his films? Fans of his should love this, as he's also in every scene ...at times too much so.
It's an art-crime caper set in Dublin. Spacey is Michael Lynch, a
lovable crime boss with a terrible American accent that seems to come and go. His crew of equally
good humored thugs include Colin Ferrell who is at least Irish, but
perhaps he's gone Hollywood because even HE struggled with the accent, I swear.
It's based on a real character, but without knowing the details I can see this is a Hollywood fantasy, and therefore probably
less interesting.
Much
like HBO's series "Big Love" dishes up disturbing religious
fundamentalists and child sexual abuse as lighthearted comedy, I get
the same feeling about this movie. The real stories are far less
humorous, to say the least. Coincidentally, Lynch is portrayed as
having two wives who cheerfully
share him without any jealousy whatsoever, one being Linda Fiorintino, who's wasted here. Normally smart and
sarcastic, I don't buy her accent or subordinate 'sister-wife' role.
And finally, Stephen is wasted because any ordinary decent actor could probably have handled his rather undemanding role.
He
plays Noel Quigley, a police detective with a hard-on for Lynch.
Thwarted in attempts to get him behind bars and humiliated in the
media, the coppers finally get a break and move in for the kill,
blasting his face off with an arsenal of machine guns. This is
problematic for several reasons. I mean, even the LAPD
would consider it overkill.
This sets it up for the next plot twist, however, and that is the problem of wives officially identifying the body. Yep,
you guessed it. Penis identification is as good as a face or fingerprints.
